St Blaise Chapel in Bergweiler
The serfs of the abbey were obliged to make a pilgrimage to Mount Blaise. For centuries, on St Blaise’s Day (3 February) and St Mark’s Day (25 April), processions were held to the chapel, followed by a fair. During the French Revolution, a Benedictine monk took refuge in the chapel. Wilhelm Frank built a house in the annex of the present sacristy and lived there as a hermit. He is still known in the village of Bergweiler as “Brother Lappes”. Over the centuries, the church, originally built of wood, suffered several fires and was rebuilt several times. This was also the case in 1716, when the present chapel was built. This is evidenced by the Latin inscription above the portal. Translated, it reads: “Destroyed by fire, rebuilt in 1716”. Today, the chapel shines even more with its high-quality interior and three altars. The entire interior was made by the same altarpiece maker who worked for Tholey Abbey. The high altar is dedicated to Saint Blaise. His statue is placed in a niche above the altar, surrounded by magnificent columns. The walls are decorated with expressive paintings depicting the 14 stations of Jesus’ way to his crucifixion. The colourful designs and paintings in the interior, as well as the golden ornaments on the altars, give the chapel a special appearance.
