Beschreibung
This priest, often known today as the “Bridge Saint” or “Patron Saint of the Seal of Confession”, lived in Prague in the 14th century. In a confrontation with King Wenceslas IV, he refused to break the seal of confession to the queen and was subsequently tortured to death. His body was thrown from a bridge into the Vltava River. Legend has it that his lifeless body was found again by a special bright miraculous light. He was then buried in the Prague Cathedral. In 1719, the tomb was opened, and it was discovered that both the bones and the tongue were intact. This unleashed a wave of devotion to Nepomuk, making him one of the most popular saints of the Baroque period. His canonisation in 1729 further intensified the devotion, which also spread to our region. The original Nepomuk Chapel was built in the 1730s and 1740s near Gonnesweiler Castle in the Baroque style. It survived the French Revolution but was completely destroyed in the post-war period. However, the memory of the chapel remained with the people. So it was possible to build a replica of the chapel in a new, charming location. While the external appearance largely imitates the baroque building, the interior is tastefully contemporary. The shape of the altar is based on the Baroque model, but goes beyond it with the inclusion of a stained glass window. The contrast between the plastered walls, the tiled floor and the open, warm roof construction is particularly striking. Those who dare to get married under the roof of Saint Nepomuk can tie the knot here.
