Underground castle complex and casemates
Fourteen metres below Saarbrücken's castle square, the Historical Museum Saar has a surprise in store. Visitors can descend into Saarbrücken's underground castle complex from the Middle Ages and Renaissance and discover fascinating historical buildings, including parts of the medieval castle, a shooting chamber, 16th-century fortifications and casemates (fortified gun emplacements), a ballroom built in the moat and a dungeon.
The bulwarks and casemates were hidden underground for centuries and are now integrated into the museum as a multimedia experience space. Modern technology and reconstructions of historical equipment enable visitors to discover history at the original site.
Permanent exhibition "Between Germany and France - Saar history since 1870"
The fate of the people in the German Saar region, which borders France, was marked by many upheavals. Three wars and two referendums brought about several border changes, which means that residents of the region who were born around 1900 had five different passports in the course of their lifes. What this meant for those affected is shown in the new permanent exhibition of the Historical Museum Saar, which traces the eventful recent history of the Franco-German border region from the war of 1870/71 to the end of the 20th century.
A range of individual topics is presented through innovative exhibition architecture and with modern exhibition methods. Colourful images of the times and original exhibits transport visitors back in time.
- On Saturdays at 3 pm: Guided tour for adults “From castle to palace”
- On Sundays and public holidays at 2 pm: Guided tour of the special exhibition, plus at 3 pm guided tour “From castle to palace” and at 4 pm “Knights’ tour” for children
- Every first Saturday of the month at 4 pm: guided tour in Arabic
