Church of St Barbara Herbitzheim
The Catholic church of St Barbara was consecrated in 1975.
The ground plan of the church has a large, round nave with a rounded chancel in front and an oval side aisle, with the sacristy opposite in the same shape.
The curved roof, which rises in two columns, reaches a height of 24 metres. The cast concrete structure appears surprisingly light and sweeping to the observer. The church and the youth centre built at the same time are embedded in a spacious outdoor area, which provides the necessary framework for the extraordinary overall impression. The church inventory includes a 16th century statue of the Madonna from Switzerland.
The statue of St Barbara was made in 1976 by master wood sculptor Richard Rottmann. The coloured concrete glass windows with their biblical motifs and the concrete reliefs by Emil Wachter from Karlsruhe, which blend harmoniously into the space, complete the interior of this modern church building. Herbitzheim stretches out on both sides of the Blies. Various finds in the village area point to Roman settlements, small farming estates, the so-called "villa rusticae".
Another relic from Roman times is the grapevine. Vines were grown on the slopes of the Blies until the 1930s. Today, only the remains of the vineyard walls on the southern slopes of the village still bear witness to this.
On the main street, Rubenheimer Straße, there is a so-called cross of thanksgiving made of sandstone with a body of Christ with the inscription "To the honour of God erected by the community of Herbitzheim for the merciful averting of the cholera in 1854". According to oral tradition, only two inhabitants are said to have fallen victim to this epidemic, which was rampant at the time.
