The late-Gothic castle church, dating from the 15th century, was given a Baroque spire by Stengel in 1743. After suffering severe damage during the Second World War, it was rebuilt in the 1950s and adorned with ornate windows by Meistermann. The chancel houses the tombs of the last princes of Saarbrücken.
Following extensive restoration, the castle church was reopened in the summer of 2004 and provides an impressive setting for the display of sacred art and cultural artefacts held by the “Saarland Cultural Heritage Foundation”.
