Once around the Saarland
Cycle around Saarland in 7 days and 6 stages. Discover baroque architecture, special nature and impressive history along the Saar and indulge in culinary and cultural delights in the Saarland towns. You should bring along a bit of fitness, as there are one or two ascents along the way, but in the end you will be rewarded with the circumnavigation of an entire federal state.
Stage description
First stage: Saarbrücken - Homburg (approx. 65 km)
Starting in the state capital of Saarbrücken, you can take your time here before setting off to explore the city centre. You're sure to find a snack for the road at the historic St. Johanner Markt before heading through the picturesque landscape of the UNESCO biosphere reserve Bliesgau via Blieskastel to Homburg. The 65 km route is easy to ride without any notable climbs and offers a nice stopover with the baroque old town of Blieskastel. Once in Homburg, a visit to the Schlossberg caves is also worthwhile.
Second stage: Homburg - Bostalsee (approx. 60 km)
The second stage leads from Homburg directly to the largest bathing lake in the southwest: Bostalsee. There is a bit of an uphill section here, but the route is shorter than before. There are a few shady stretches through the beautiful nature of the Jägersburg Forest.
Third stage: Bostalsee - Losheim am See (approx. 60 km)
The third stage continues to Losheim am See. At the beginning you ride up the Peterberg and therefore have a good bit of a climb, but the view is well worth it. Along the Prims you finally head towards the Hunsrück Hochwald National Park. It is worth taking a break in Nonnweiler and visiting the Otzenhausen Celtic Park before finally reaching Losheim at the reservoir.
Fourth stage: Losheim am See - Perl (approx. 50 km)
Once you have left the Celts behind, the 4th stage takes you to Perl in the border triangle. Here the route is truly borderless, as you pass Rhineland-Palatinate, Luxembourg and France. Here, too, you can follow in the footsteps of history and make a stop at the Roman villa in Nenning. This stage also includes the Saarland's landmark: the Saarschleife! All in all, this is a leisurely walk. Tip for Perl: Be sure to plan a wine tasting!
Fifth stage: Perl - Überherrn (approx. 68 km)
In the penultimate stage, the route leads through the vineyards along the German-French border to Überherrn. By far the most tranquil and moderate part of the route offers secluded spots for a short break, and those who want to linger a little longer can also take a short detour to the Romans and visit the Roman Villa Borg.
Sixth stage: Überherrn - Saarbrücken (approx. 54 km)
Almost done! The last stage leads back to Saarbrücken and offers varied ups and downs. If you want to make another historical stop here, you can experience the history of the Saarland from the miners' point of view and visit one of the highlights of the Saarland: the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks. Finally, the tour ends in Saarbrücken and we can say: Congratulations! You have completely circumnavigated the Saarland once.
