3-day bikepacking: camping tour along the Saarland cycle path

Combine cycling and camping on this three-day tour along the Saarland Cycle Path. The scenically varied stage tour leads from Saarbrücken, through the UNESCO Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve and the St. Wendel region to the Saar Loop in Mettlach.

The tour is suitable for gravel bikes as well as other touring bikes. For a bikepacking tour close to nature, camping facilities with campsites have been selected along the stage destinations.

Day 1: Saarbrücken - Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve

Before the start of the tour, you can explore the state capital of Saarbrücken and visit Saarbrücken Castle and the baroque Ludwigskirche church. Afterwards, the tour takes you on a 56 km route through the Bliesgau biosphere to the stage finish at the Walsheim campsite.

Day 2: Bliesgau biosphere - St. Wendeler Land

Leaving the biosphere, you now cycle northwards into the St. Wendel region. Passing the baroque town of Blieskastel and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, the Saarland Cycle Route takes you 85 kilometres to the largest recreational lake in south-west Germany - Lake Bostalsee. Here you can end the evening at the campsite on the shore.

Day 3: St. Wendeler Land - Saarschleife

On this route of approx. 63 km, you cycle uphill towards the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and spend the night at the LandGut Girtenmühle campsite by the Losheim reservoir. The next day you cycle on a short route of approx. 10 km to the Saar Loop in Mettlach - the landmark of the Saarland!

From Mettlach, you can either cycle back to Saarbrücken on the Saar cycle path or with the help of local public transport.
