Wine

When some 60 years ago a few winegrowers on the slopes of the Moselle around Perl, Nennig and Sehndorf began to cultivate vines again, many saw this project as a failure from the outset.

Today, wine lovers all over the world are grateful for the toil and sweat that allow wines of a very special character to thrive on the region's shell limestone soil. Real specialities of Saarland wine culture are the multiple award-winning Burgundy wines and sparkling wines.
On weekends from April to October, the winegrowers in the Saarland take turns opening their wine cellars and invite you to enjoy their wines and sparkling wines in a cosy atmosphere. You can look forward to the following wine specialities:

AUXERROIS (PINOT AUXERROIS)

This speciality originates from the French town of Auxerre and spread throughout Europe as a result of the Huguenot expulsion. The Auxerrois is an elegant, low-acid wine with a fine bouquet typical of the variety. As a light quality wine, it is an ideal companion to fish or asparagus, and as a powerful late harvest or Auslese wine, it is also an ideal accompaniment to fried or hearty cheeses.

BURGUNDY WINES (PINOT)

Since the 1980s, many wines of the Burgundy family have found their home in the Saarland. In addition to the classic blue Pinot Noir, the white wine varieties Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, as well as the natural Burgundy crosses Chardonnay and Auxerrois also join the family.

BLUE LATE BURGUNDY

The classic among the red wines. Most Burgundy varieties emerge from this variety as natural self-mutants. Pinot noir wines taste full-bodied and velvety and have a fruity aroma and nuances of almond. They are ideal companions for cheese platters and game. Especially recommended for the cold season.

GREY BURGUNDY (PINOT GRIS)

Under the name "Ruländer", Pinot Gris presents itself here as a full-bodied, extract-rich wine of the finestquality. Recommended drinking: with spicy cheese and spicy dishes.

WHITE BURGUNDY (PINOT BLANC)

As a light, finely fruity wine, Pinot Blanc is enjoying increasing popularity. Recommended drinking: with fish and all seafood and shellfish.

ELBLING

The Elbing is considered the oldest cultivated grape variety in Europe. The Romans simply called it "Vitis alba", the "white vine", and first brought it to the Moselle 2000 years ago. Until the Middle Ages, this wine became the most widespread grape variety in Germany under the names "Alben" and "Elben". Since the 19th century, it has disappeared from most growing areas and from the rest of the Moselle and grows almost exclusively on the shell limestone soils of the Upper Moselle in Saarland. Drinking suggestions: As a dry quality wine, it is ideal with hearty snacks, but also with fish and seafood.
Tip: Try the sparkling Elbling sparkling wines with bottle fermentation or the quality wine of guaranteed origin "Obermosel Elbling trocken" in the white Schlegel bottle.

RED ELBLING

This grape variety is a colour mutation of white Elbling. Despite its name, it is described as a white wine and produces a delicate salmon-coloured wine. The winegrowers on the Upper Moselle have only been harvesting and fermenting the red and white berries separately for a few years, and some of them can grow in the same vineyard, even on the same vine. This rarity is very rare and usually sold out after a short time. Both as wine and as sparkling wine, this is the ideal summer wine.

RIVANER (MÜLLER THURGAU)

A wine that has made itself popular with all wine lovers due to its light, spicy nutmeg note. A mild, uncomplicated wine that is ideal with delicately aromatic dishes.

GEWÜRZTRAMINER

Is the noblest bouquet variety and only very rarely found on the Moselle. The wine is reminiscent of the scent of roses. Drinking suggestions: especially good with foie gras, desserts and spicy cheeses.

RIESLING

The king of white wines grows almost exclusively on steep slopes in the Riesling region of the Moselle. With its fine, racy character and its elegantly fruity bouquet, it scores points above all for its versatility. As a young wine, it is an ideal summer wine; aged Riesling wines are suitable dry with light meals, semi-dry especially with cheese, and noble sweet Auslesen and Beerenauslesen with desserts or as an aperitif.
