Viez

The name Viez is derived from the Roman vice vinum - wine substitute, as the Romans already called the local cider.

The demand was great, but there was not always enough, not every area was suitable for cultivation and some people could not afford the wine. So someone came up with the idea of pressing apples instead of grapes and using them to make an alcoholic drink that replaced wine. This is how Viez became the substitute for the popular wine.

The special characteristics of Viez are its pronounced acidity and its dry, fine-tart character. Viez is an integral part of the regional culture of enjoyment and friends of the drink are recommended to attend the Merzig Viezfest, which always honours the drink and its fine variations on the first weekend in October.
