The Baroque Castle Church in Blieskastel
The Castle Church – a Baroque gem
With the relocation of Imperial Count Franz Carl von der Leyen’s residence from Koblenz to Blieskastel, a flurry of building activity began in the town. The foundation stone for the Franciscan monastery church, commissioned by the Count, was laid in 1776. The architectural model for this building was clearly drawn from the Italian High Baroque style. Characteristic features include the richly decorated interior, the stuccoed walls and the gilded high altar. The statue of Saint Sebastian found a new home in the gable of what is now the castle church. The sarcophagi of Franz Carl and Marianne von der Leyen can still be found in the crypt today. (The church is open to visitors daily)
