The Moderne Galerie is one of the leading museums in southwestern Germany and serves as the Saarland’s premier museum institution. Shaped by its location near the border, its rich collections—spanning from Impressionism to the present—unfold in a dialogue between French and German artistic movements in particular. Key areas of focus include the paintings of the Berlin Secession, German Expressionism, and the art of the École de Paris and Informel. The museum houses the estate of the sculptor Alexander Archipenko and boasts extensive collections of prints and photography, the latter of which can be traced directly back to Otto Steinert, the founder of “subjective photography.”
The museum building is considered one of the pioneering museum structures of the early Federal Republic of Germany. Designed by the St. Ingbert-based architect Hanns Schönecker and constructed in three phases between 1965 and 1976, it is now a protected historic monument due to its significant architectural and historical importance. Thanks to its spectacular expansion, the museum is able to provide an ideal setting for international contemporary art.
