Beschreibung
The Romans are still very much present in the Saarland nowadays. In the Roman Villa Nennig you can be part of something very special and see a multimedia show about the original Roman villa complex and the Roman mosaic in Nennig.
The Roman mosaic
The Roman mosaic in Nennig is one of the most beautiful and largest examples of Roman mosaic art of the 2nd and 3rd century. North of the Alps, this mosaic is one of the very few that remained at their original site. A local farmer discovered it in 1852 by accident. The mosaic originally formed the centre of a Roman grand villa. Seven picture fields display scenes from an amphitheatre, a colourful, yet gruel scenario.
Multimedia show
This multimedia representation provides detailed information about the history and interpretation of the Roman villa complex and the mosaic floor including a three-dimensional reconstruction of the estate.
The Roman villa in Nennig is one of the most outstanding monuments in Saarland due to its magnificent mosaic floor. Measuring 160 square meters, it is made up of over 3 million tiles and still impresses today with its realism and richness of detail. The mosaic is one of the most important examples of Roman art north of the Alps.
It depicts vivid scenes from the Roman amphitheater: bloody animal fights, musicians and show fighters and the battle between two gladiators.
This outstanding work of art from the 3rd century AD once adorned the entrance hall of a luxurious estate, which also stood out among the country villas in the Moselle region. The length of the façade was 140 m, supplemented by a walkway and a bathhouse with a swimming pool. A short film in German, French and English informs you about the history and reconstruction of the villa.
Nearby is the "Mahlknopf", a huge burial mound which, at 44 meters in diameter, is one of the largest Roman burial monuments in Germany.
A stop on the roads of the Romans.
