Old town hall
Beschreibung
Many believers flocked to the city, bringing with them economic prosperity. In 1440, the Elector of Trier, Jacob I of Sierck, donated the area in front of the church, known as the “Kaff”, to the parish for the construction of a market hall. A two-storey building with a market hall was built. The upper floor housed the municipal administrative offices.
During the wars of the 17th century, the building was destroyed several times. Finally, the town acquired the property, and the master carpenter Johannes Steininger drew up plans for a smaller new building. His design was based on that of the chief architect of the Palatinate Zweibrücken, Friedrich Georg Wahl. The building was finally inaugurated in 1803. Later, a staircase was added on the market side, which still bears the coat of arms of St Wendel. Over the course of time, the building was used for various purposes. During the time of the Saxe-Coburg dynasty, it housed the district court and until 1922 it was the mayor’s office. From the 1960s until the opening of the Mia Münster House, it was home to the town’s Heimatmuseum (local museum). When the building was converted into a registry office, many couples from St Wendel came here to say “I do” and get married. Since 2020, the town archives of the Administrative District of St Wendel have been housed here. The old town hall is a building with a colourful past and many people who have come and gone.
