The start and finish of the ‘Traumschleife Nahequelle-Pfad’ trail is the source of the River Nahe in Selbach. This is where the River Nahe rises; it begins as a small trickle and then, after 120 km, flows into the River Rhine at Bingen. The walking trail leads through a variety of woodland settings, across lush green meadows and through stunning countryside. There are frequent opportunities to enjoy fantastic views, and numerous rest stops along the way invite you to linger. A variety of woodland scenes, small water-bearing ditches and wetlands impress both young and older walkers alike. A large part of the Saarland can be seen from the heights of the ‘Sengert’ (500 m). The large game reserve by the refuge offers a glimpse into the local wildlife, and fish can be observed in the pond. A bee trail with an insect hotel provides information about the lives of local insects. At the source of the Nahe itself, there is a large adventure playground and a ‘book tree’, which offers children’s books to borrow or swap.
Close to the source of the Nahe lies Lake Bostal, with its wide range of water sports and numerous leisure activities for the whole family.
Author's recommendation
The Nahe Source Trail is one of five themed trails in the Sankt Wendel region. Each of these trails invites visitors to immerse themselves in an era from our ancestors’ past.
On the ‘Traumschleife’ section of the Nahequelle Trail, walkers set out in search of traces of the Celts. Numerous interactive stations and play elements offer child-friendly insights into this mystical era, characterised by a deep connection with nature, rituals and secrets. Directions
From the enclosure around the source of the Nahe, the route passes the playground and heads into the woods. Here, the path follows natural trails and crosses two forest tracks. The route descends to a rest area with a seating area. The walk continues across open fields, offering sweeping views, including of the village of Selbach.
After a climb through the open countryside up to the ‘Sengert’ hill, the route heads back into the woods along paths and forest tracks towards ‘Eckersberg’. Here, the route changes direction again towards Selbach and leads to the Irschberg, where the woodland thins out and you descend once more across open meadows to the game reserve. Following the marked path past the ‘Bücherbaum’ (book tree), you reach the starting point of the Nahequelle Trail.

Report the condition of a path
Have you been out walking on our trails and spotted a fault or damage? If so, please feel free to report it using our fault reporting form. Thank you very much for your help.
Please note:
As a general rule, you enter the forest and walk on the footpaths at your own risk!
Depending on the season and weather conditions, certain sections of the trails may require extra care when walking. You should therefore wear clothing suitable for the season and weather, and walking boots with appropriate tread. Please be mindful of breaking branches and damaged trees. In strong winds, and in winter due to snow and ice, there is an increased risk of falling trees and falling branches.
