The current observation tower was inaugurated in 1976 as a symbol of Franco-German friendship and is accessible for all, reached by a panoramic lift. The tower houses two exhibitions: The “Summit Meeting” (“Gipfeltreffen”)
exhibition explores the exciting and varied history between Germany and France. The crises and high points of past eras are also explored, and local history is included. The “CoZwo und Co” (“Co2 and Co”) exhibition focuses on “climate protection” and uses multimedia to illustrate the consequences of the climate crisis and how each individual can help to protect nature. From the exhibition rooms, you first reach the observation platform of the tower. From here you can enjoy a fascinating view over Saarland and far beyond. For those less familiar with geography, there are overview photos on the railings to help with orientation. For those who want to look further, there are two fixed telescopes for a clear view of neighbouring France. Back on the plateau, you can see and touch the relics of Mount Schaumberg’s history with your own eyes and hands. The remains of a late medieval round tower and parts of an old curtain wall dating from around 1200 are valuable witnesses to our eventful past. The playground for the little ones is also based on history. Designed in a Celtic-Roman style, the playground is reminiscent of the small Gallic village that made Asterix famous. It invites you to play, dig and have fun. At the end of your visit to Mount Schaumberg, when you have had enough of romping around and gathering information, you can recharge your batteries at the Schaumberg-Alm restaurant. From the viewing platform on the terrace, you can enjoy one last spectacular panorama of the region before making your way back home.
