Mount Peterberg Observatory
In 1997, after five years of construction, the Mount Peterberg Observatory was opened at an altitude of 584 metres.
Beschreibung
An important factor in the choice of location was the dark rural sky and a largely unobstructed panoramic view. The location on Mount Peterberg is particularly favourable for astronomical activities in Saarland due to the distance to brightly lit cities and industrial areas.
Since then, the observatory building has been continuously extended and the optical instruments have been updated to the latest astronomical standards. There are two domes with multiple telescopes for observing, photographing and physically studying celestial objects by using spectroscopy. A true paradise for astronomy enthusiasts. The main instrument in the large dome is an astrographically optimised reflecting telescope with a diameter of 50 cm, but there are also refracting telescopes with different apertures and focal lengths. Special optics can be used to observe the sun, for example, and your own eyes can see the craters on the moon, the rings of Saturn and the countless nebulae and galaxies in our universe.
In order to preserve the dark night sky for observation, the Saarland Amateur Astronomers’ Association is involved in the “Sankt Wendeler SternenLand” project, which takes many measures to counteract the increasing light pollution of the night sky. To monitor the sky, an AllSky camera and equipment for measuring sky brightness have been installed. To promote astronomy and experience the beauty of the night sky, a “Star Gazer Place” was built behind the Observatory in cooperation with the district of St Wendel. Visitors will find a rotating star chart, a rotating and tilting couch for viewing the sky, binocular holders and additional information boards about celestial objects. Visitors to the Observatory can learn about astronomy topics through public talks or individual group sessions and, with a bit of luck and clear skies, get a glimpse of the vastness of our universe.
