Glan-Blies cycle route
Schwer
The Glan-Blies cycle route, also rideable as a stage route, runs for about 130 km through the beautiful river landscapes of the Glan and Blies. From Sarreguemines in Lorraine, it goes upstream along the Blies to the Glan until its confluence with the Nahe. Three countries practically say “Hello!” to you. Starting in France, it passes through the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in Saarland, then continues through scenic landscapes and towns in Rhineland-Palatinate. Mostly following former railway lines, the Glan-Blies cycle route offers every cyclist a carefree cycling pleasure and has been awarded four stars by the ADFC for years.

Trail signs Glan-Blies cycle route
Typical for the Glan-Blies cycle route are the varied landscapes along the two rivers Glan and Blies. They characterize the cross-border Glan-Blies cycle route, which winds predominantly flat and mostly traffic-free from Lorraine’s Sarreguemines in France through the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in Saarland to Staudernheim in the North Palatinate. Over about 130 kilometers you enjoy idyllic river landscapes and occasionally encounter magnificent storks. Following the footsteps of the Romans who once settled here, you experience the contemplative atmosphere of the Blies and Glan valleys. Countless churches and castles, small old towns, and exciting industrial monuments ensure cultural variety, while you can challenge yourself sportily from time to time on a canoe or draisine ride. Five short stages on the ADFC quality route awarded with four stars provide enough time to enjoy and extensively explore the beautiful area around the Glan-Blies cycle route.
Large parts of the route run along the track of the former Glantal railway and also the former Bliestal railway, which have been developed into cycle paths that are not only mostly flat but also almost traffic-free. As a result, the route is not only particularly enjoyable but also ideal for occasional cyclists and families with children.
Start and finish of the route are well connected to the rail network. Those who drive to the starting point by car can pick it up again at the end of the route with the help of the train. However, you should note that not all stage destinations are connected to a train station. For those wishing to cycle only parts of the route or to break off en route, in addition to the start and finish (Sarreguemines/F and Bad Sobernheim), the train stations Blieskastel, Homburg, and Glan-Münchweiler are suitable.
Autorentipp
There are dining options in Sarreguemines as well as along the route in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve between Reinheim and Homburg. The town centers of Blieskastel and Homburg also offer some places to stop for a meal. Neighbors in Rhineland-Palatinate attract visitors with businesses in Waldmohr and Schönenberg-Kübelberg extending to Ulmet, Meisenheim, and Staudernheim.
Various accommodations can be found along the route for overnight stays. Thus, nothing stands in the way of a varied tour.
