Erfweiler-Ehlingen Retirees’ Lodge
On the picturesque edge of the woods in Erfweiler-Ehlingen, a charming hamlet in the municipality of Mandelbachtal, lies a true gem that embodies the spirit of the region: the PWV local group’s hiking hut. What makes this hut so special is its spirit – it is run with great passion, pride and dedication by the village’s pensioners and volunteers. These sprightly retirees not only look after the guests’ well-being, but also keep the entire site in tip-top condition. The result is a wonderfully unpretentious, family-like atmosphere in which locals, walking groups, cyclists and families alike feel right at home.
The food is excellent: the menu features typical Saarland and Palatinate hut classics. From hearty homemade sausage platters and Lyoner sausage to freshly spread lard-on-bread and a selection of chilled drinks, everything is offered at very fair, family-friendly prices. Whether in the cosy, rustic dining room on cooler days or in the sunny outdoor area surrounded by greenery – the hut is guaranteed to invite you to linger for a while.
The hiking hut is the perfect hub for exploring the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO. Right on the doorstep lies an extensive network of walking and cycling trails that wind through gentle hilly landscapes, shady beech forests and past the region’s characteristic, species-rich orchard meadows. A popular nearby destination, for example, is the historic replica of the optical telegraph, which offers fascinating insights into the history of communication in the 19th century. The Erfweiler-Ehlingen Cultural Landscape Trail can also be combined perfectly with a cosy stop at the hut.
Note on opening hours: As the hut is run entirely by volunteers, it is usually open on Sundays and public holidays, as well as on specific club events.
