Charcoal pile
Charcoal burners in Walhausen, who still practice this ancient tradition to this day, show how charcoal was produced 500 years ago.
The over 2 m high charcoal pile in Walhausen's Buchwald forest is a reminder of charcoal production in pre-industrial times between 1454 and 1794. Charcoal was the most important source of energy at this time and was needed in large quantities for smelting copper ores.
However, when coal mining began in the 19th century, charcoal production became less profitable and was eventually discontinued. The high demand for wood also changed the forest landscapes. Beech wood played a major role in charcoal production. For this reason, the growth of this tree was strongly promoted by forestry administrations, and it still characterises the image of the state forests in the Nohfelden area today.
The traditional charcoal burning festival is held every five years at the pile in Walhausen to commemorate the history of charcoal production. The next charcoal burning festival will be held in 2028.
