Blieskastel
Baroque royal seat with plenty of charm
Located in the heart of the biosphere and with the baroque old town, Blieskastel is a small residential town with a lot of charm and has recently also become a Slow City. Countess Marianne von der Leyen, who resided in Blieskastel in the 18th century, is responsible for this enchanting legacy. Here you can really let your mind unwind and enjoy the day.
Above all, the many beautifully planted pots of the “Edible City” give you a special flair to experience the atmosphere of the city. The plant pots are planted from mid-May until autumn and can be enjoyed in the truest sense of the word. The Bürgergarten at the Klosterpark in Blieskastel is also a great backdrop to enjoy the day and sometimes to harvest something.
Visitors can experience the baroque backdrop of Blieskastel particularly vividly on a guided tour with Countess Marianne von der Leyen. Dressed in a historical costume, a tour guide shows the imposing alleys of the old town. The center of the baroque gem is the Paradeplatz, lined with plane trees and the historic town hall. Not far from there is the old market square with the Napoleon Fountain. From here, you can walk through the winding Pfarrgasse to Schlossbergstraße with its imposing court houses. At the upper end of the street stands the baroque centerpiece of Blieskastel, the castle church, which was consecrated in 1778. In the immediate vicinity is the orangery with a beautiful baroque garden. A few minutes away is the pilgrimage monastery with the Holy Cross Chapel and Pieta. A staircase leads back to the city. The Clock Museum is well worth a visit.
Blieskastel's landmark is the approximately 5,000-year-old Gollenstein, which is one of the oldest cultural monuments in Germany. At around 7 m high, it is the largest menhir in Central Europe.
The Würzbacher Weiher was the site of the summer residence of the von der Leyen family. Of the once magnificent pleasure buildings, the Annahof, a former estate, and the so-called Red Building still remain. Numerous inns, cafés and huts invite you to take a break after a nice walk around the pond.
In the middle of the Bliesgau, in the small village of Böckweiler, stands the over 1,000-year-old Stephanus Church.
The Bliestal-Freizeitweg, a former railroad line that runs straight through the Bliestal, is a real insider tip for cyclists and inline skaters. The approximately 17-kilometer route is super flat and there are numerous beer gardens and restaurants along the way. The Bliestal-Freizeitweg is part of the 4-star (ADFC) Glan-Blies Cycle Path.
