Description

Tour route: St. Wendel - Oberthal - Tholey - Marpingen - Rheinstrasse - Habenichts - Remmesweiler - Oberlinxweiler - St. Wendel

This tour is not signposted with its own logo.

Follow the Wendelinus cycle path to Tholey. Change there to the Mount Schaumberg cycle path in the direction of Marpingen. After Rheinstrasse, follow the Saar-Oster and Saar-Nahe-Höhen cycle paths displaying the red and orange Saarland logo. In Oberlinxweiler, turn left off the Saar-Oster-Höhen cycle path towards St. Wendel train station. Always follow the train station symbol back to the starting point at the car park.

We start at the beginning of the new Wendelinus cycle path behind St. Wendel railway station in the direction of Oberthal. Completely flat and perfectly maintained, we cycle along the railway embankment through the upper Blies valley. There are always benches along the way, inviting you to linger and enjoy the scenery. Sculptures by a local artist along the way delight cyclists of all ages. After just a few kilometres - we haven't really warmed up yet - a cycle kiosk with a small beer garden offers chilled drinks at the former Bliesen railway station.Let's treat ourselves to this early break, because the climbs are still to come in the second part of the tour. The route continues to Oberthal. The Saar-Nahe-Höhen cycle path crosses our railway line here and if you want, you can combine the relatively short Wendelinus loop with the Bostalsee loop at the former Oberthal railway station and turn it into a fantastic all-day tour. The route continues along the railway line towards Tholey and becomes increasingly beautiful. Completely secluded, almost enchanted, the Wendelinus cycle path leads us slightly elevated through the idyllic cultural landscape of northern Saarland. Once again, there are benches along the way where you can relax and unwind.Shortly before Tholey, the railway line disappears into a tunnel and we are led uphill to the right. But it is only about 40 metres uphill to the cycle and hiking car park.

Clearly signposted, we follow the Wendelinus cycle path to the right until we reach the old town centre of Tholey. The early Gothic abbey church from the 13th century is well worth a visit here. We reach the Schaumberg cycle path, which we follow in the direction of Marpingen. Initially we cycle along quiet side roads, then turn right for a few metres along the main road until we are directed left onto a farm track. We are now on the Mistenberg high above the Alsbach valley and enjoy the distant views. Through beautiful meadows and as if on a viewing platform, we cycle over to the Kumpberg (367 m) and then down to Marpingen at breakneck speed. At the bottom of the valley, we cross the Alsbach and from now on it's uphill: we have to climb a total of 150 metres in altitude up to the Weinhausköpfchen near the small Marpingen district of Rheinstraße. At the top, our Wendelinus route turns right towards Habenichts onto the Saar-Oster and Saar-Nahe-Höhen cycle paths with the red and orange Saarland logos.

Before that, we can visit the Marienkapelle chapel just a few metres to the left and there is also a traditional inn.Refreshed, we cycle along the beautiful old Roman road on the ridge at the edge of the forest to Habenichts. Here the two roads fork and we follow the red Saarland logo, turn left and speed down to Remmesweiler. Very beautiful south-west German farmhouses have been preserved there. In the village, we reach the main road, which we follow to the right for a very short distance. Our route immediately branches off to the left again in the direction of St. Wendel and once again the route becomes very beautiful. We cycle past the idyllically situated gravel mill through the Sulzbach valley towards Bliestal. Fruit trees and beautiful valley meadows line the route. We come directly to the Linxweiler Pforte. This is the name given to a narrow section of the upper Blies valley, through which the main road, railway line, Blies and our cycle path now squeeze.

Watch out in Oberlinxweiler: Here we branch off to the left from the Saar-Oster-Höhen cycle path towards St. Wendel railway station. Always following the railway station symbol, we are led back to the starting point at the Wendelinus cycle path car park via local roads. In St. Wendel, it is worth visiting the historic town centre with the 14th century Wendelinus basilica and the beautiful medieval ambience around the castle square. The Sculpture Route also starts here.

The route is asphalted throughout and is therefore recommended even in wet weather conditions. A small incline shortly before Tholey and a steep climb of 150 metres in altitude from Marpingen to the small district of Rheinstraße can be easily mastered by experienced children with suitable multi-speed bikes. The Wendelinus loop can be combined with the Bostalsee loop and the Sankt Wendel loop to form a longer tour.

The route is paved throughout and is, therefore, also recommended in wet weather conditions. A small climb just before Tholey and a steep 150 m climb from Marpingen to the district of Rheinstrasse can be mastered quite easily by children with sufficient riding skills and appropriate multi-speed bikes.
