Fritz Wunderlich cycle path

Bicycle Rides

The Fritz Wunderlich cycle path links seamlessly to the Sankt Wendeler Land railway cycle path and thus offers an extension of the cycle route to Altenglan via Kusel. The cycle route is named after the singer who was born in Kusel. Between Altenglan and Kusel, the route also runs entirely along the route of a former railway line over 2 high viaducts and 2 tunnels. The predominantly water-bound surface and the route over the old railway line, which is mostly densely surrounded by bushes and trees, make the cycle tour on the path a quiet, natural experience.

Description

The 26 km Fritz Wunderlich cycle path begins at Altenglan train station. Via Rammelsbach, it reaches the district town of Kusel, where it joins a disused railway line, which it follows to Freisen in Saarland, where it links up with the Sankt Wendeler Land railway cycle path. Gently ascending away from any roads after Kusel, the Fritz Wunderlich cycle path is embedded in the North Palatinate Uplands. Lichtenberg castle can be reached via the "Around Lichtenberg castle" route with moderate climbs or in Thallichtenberg with quite a steep climb via the country road. In Thallichtenberg, the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle route also branches off in the direction of Baumholder and the castle cycle route. The route is characterised by lots of bridges and a tunnel; a particular highlight is the viaduct in Oberkirchen, which impressively spans the village and the valley. And the Fritz Wunderlich cycle path has yet another special highlight: Between Kusel and Pfeffelbach, there are no junctions with other traffic routes – the Fritz Wunderlich cycle path is a huge hit with families thanks to its high level of safety and amazing nature experience.

The route logo shows a cheerful Kusel cyclist waving and a large red musical note, which reflects the connection to the Kusel-born tenor Fritz Wunderlich. In Saarland, the path is marked by an orange sign with the path inscription.
