Benedictine abbey St. Mauritius Tholey

The Benedictine abbey in Tholey is considered the spiritual centre of the Saarland and the perfect place to retreat and immerse yourself in the world of Benedictine monks.

Their chapter house, which is accessible via the stairs of the tower in the baroque garden, is only open during Holy Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours.
Tholey Abbey is the oldest monastery in Germany. It was first mentioned in 634 AD and today houses twelve monks from five nations aged between 24 and 75. The abbey church is one of the oldest Gothic churches in Germany and is the only one in Europe whose windows have seen a complete redesign in the 21st century. 34 of the 37 windows were designed by Mahbuba Maqsoodi, an Afghan artist of Muslim faith. The design of the three remaining choir windows is courtesy of Gerhard Richter, the most eminent living artist of our time.
From 1 October, Tholey Abbey is open from Wednesday to Monday between 10 am and 5 pm. Entrance is via the new visitor centre at Römerallee 5, where, in addition to an exhibition, you will also find the abbey’s shop selling local products, including delicacies produced by the abbey such as honey, jam and fruit brandies, the new Tholeyer Abteibräu beer and abbey wine.

Don’t miss
The early Gothic abbey church built between 1230 and 1260 AD with its 37 new windows is particularly worth seeing. The three choir windows by Gerhard Richter are more than nine metres hight.

Depending on the time of day, the colourful stained glass windows will direct your view into the upper garden, where the varied play of colours of the light reflections in the interior is reflected on the vaulted caps and the wall surfaces.
The Baroque organ case dates from 1736 and was built by Roman Benedikt Nollet from Trier.
The abbey church features high quality works by the church goldsmith Fritz Schwerd from 1963. The wooden choir stalls in the main choir of the abbey church date from 1704. They have a high back wall with projecting beams. 14 sculptures – seven on each side – symbolise the duties of the daily monastic routine.
