The City
The saint and the duchess
About the city
A famous saint, a charming aristocratic lady and a very commited mayor – read on to find out why this motley crew plays such an important part in St Wendel’s history.
On the traces of St Wendelin
St Wendel’s landmark and its dominating centre is the mighty basilica “St Wendalinus“ where St Wendelin is buried. According to legend, he came to St Wendel from Scotland in the 7th century to live here as a recluse and missionary. In particular in autumn, many pilgrims from all over Europe visit his grave.
The Duchess
The beautiful private town houses around the church date back to the 19th century and are closely related to the era of a duchess of that time that is very much beloved by the citizens of St Wendel. Luise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg came to St Wendel in 1824. Here, far away from ther unloving husband, she reigned over her small principality of Lichtenberg on the Blies that was allocated to the house of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg after the Congress of Vienna.
Contemporary St Wendel
In 1993, a very committed gentleman full of ideas took up the post of mayor of St Wendel and has since then transformed it into a destination that has become well-known for its sport events organised here, such as cycle races and car rallys. The charming scenery surrounding the town adds to St Wendel’s appeal.
