About the city

Easy-going Homburg used to be a bastion of Louis XIV, the Sun King, in order to defend the Western border of France

A prince elector’s dream

Homburg’s market square is nowadays busy with locals on a Saturday morning, sitting idly in one of the many cafés or strolling around. Once, it was brimming with soldiers, going in and out of the commander’s office that is now the local library.
In late Baroque times, Homburg became very famous when Charles II August, Duke of Zweibrücken, ordered to build one of the largest and most splendid castles in Europe in the city, Karlsberg Castle.

Academic merits and the art of brewing

Anyone who likes beer, should seriously consider visiting Homburg with southwest Germany’s biggest brewery being located here. The city also has a university renowned for its faculty of medicine, an attractive shopping centre and a phantastic flea and antique market (each first Saturday of the month). All of this comes with the enchanting scenery of the Bliesgau surrounding Homburg.
